Recognised as one of England’s top garden makers, plant specialist Mary-Anne Robb’s planting has been described in ‘The Most Amazing Gardens in Britain & Ireland’ as “discerning and sensitive, revealing a keen sympathy for old and well-loved shrubs and climbers. At every turn there is a new delight, from the stone-paved terrace bursting with flowers, foliage and imaginatively planted pots, to formal pools, exuberant herbaceous beds and avenues of decorative trees.” Cothay has also received the highest accolade of two stars from The Good Garden Guide.

Season Tickets: Single: £21, Joint: £38. Valid for a full calendar year.

GUIDED HOUSE TOURS
The manor as it exists today was built in 1485. The angel-corbelled Great Hall, with its early furniture and the wall painting depicting the funeral procession of Reynard the Fox, invoke a time when England was still fighting the Wars of the Roses. Few houses in England remain so evocatively medieval. The late historian and Country Life contributor Christopher Hussey wrote upon visiting Cothay that “the smell of the beeswax and wood smoke from the fire mingle with the history of this ancient house, adding to the feeling that little has changed since the first custodians of the most perfect small fifteenth-century country house that survives in the Kingdom made their way across its stone floors”.
